Happy Kentucky Derby Day

In honor of the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby I wanted to share a funny story with you. I had never gambled before until I met my husband Ted. I was only 22, very young and naive. When we were dating some 40 plus years ago Ted took me to my first horse race. I believe it was at Gulfstream Park in Hollywood Florida. We sat out the first few races and he taught me how to handicap a horse race. This means he taught me how to figure out how the horses ran in the past, their previous practice times and if they were long distance runners or short. If they came on towards the end of the race or tired out . It was all very interesting. There was alot of information to take in and was confusing. But all the information was there in the programs you just had to understand it. Well Ted and I then did our own seperate handicapping. When we had picked our first, second and third horses we compared notes. Funny enough we had both picked the same horses for first and second. But the third horse we disagreed on. We decided to buy 2 tickets one with my picks and one with his picks. The race started and both our first and second horses were doing well. When the race ended our horses came in first and second as we bet them but for third place we had a dead heat (they tied) for both our third place pics. To this day I have never seen another dead heat race it is very rare. We collected on both race tickets. Ted decided that day he was going to marry me.

Until next time enjoy your life!
